Capt. Eric Knott, the state-appointed harbormaster, said the accident took place early Monday morning when one of two barges being towed drifted away while the driver was attempting to dock and slammed into the 50-foot yacht.
The custom-built yacht, the Sea Jay, is a year-old catamaran that was being prepped at the Hinckley boatyard in Stamford for a trip across the Pacific Ocean.
The crash broke off the back of one hull of the Sea Jay and damaged the back of the other, in addition to other structural damage, he said.
The crash is currently under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard.
